This module aims to introduce me to the key concepts and theoretical approaches that underpin media studies. I will explore a range of media forms – print media, film, radio, television and new media - applying a number of different theoretical approaches and methodologies. It is the aim of this module to give me the opportunity to further develop my understanding of the key media concepts of representation, ideology, analysis, audience and media language.
To study the media is to study the world in which we live. The greater my knowledge and understanding of that wider context, the greater my appreciation of the ideas and issues I will be exploring over the course of the next three years.
I will learn to design and execute rigorous research projects on media and communications, investigating issues that are socially and culturally significant, supporting my arguments with evidence and reflecting on the wider implications of my findings. This process will strengthen my ability to think creatively and critically about my own media consumption and production, and about the wider context that I will be working in as a media or communications professional.
The module is split into two assignments:
Assignment One - 5 patchworks of 350 words each
Assignment Two - Research Report of 2000 words
